There are several good organizations that can be contacted for rescue and adoption of Maine Coons. For breed information and standards, the Maine Coon Breeder and Fanciers Association can be contacted. Often there may be retired breeder cats or retired show cats that are available for adoption. The Association also has a list of member breeders.

Petfinders is one of the largest national networks for adoptable animals. I highly suggest that you look there, or check your local animal shelters for animals who need homes! Some real gems of animals are found there and are just as deserving of a home - and sometimes purebred animals that find their way there! A family may be forced to give up a pet, an owner passed away, an animal ran away from home... there are a thousand reasons why or how a purebred animal ends up in a shelter. More information can be found at the International Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A search can be done for local SPCA organizations through Google or Yahoo!

Another way to help some animals is with an easy 'daily' click at The Animal Rescue Site. I verified the legitimacy of this at Snopes!

The way this works is that the sponsors get involved and pay CharityUSA.com (the parent entity of the Animal Rescue Site) a certain amount of funds based on the number of clicks that the site receives. CharityUSA parents a number of "click to donate" sites, and it's worth a visit! Familiar ones include Breast Cancer and Rainforest awareness.
